Self-Managed Participants

If you are a self-managed or plan-managed NDIS participant you have the option to choose whether your workers need a clearance, giving you the freedom to choose who delivers the supports you need as well as peace of mind that the service is of the highest quality and standards.

If you have a representative or nominee who assists you to self-manage your plan, they can request that a worker delivering NDIS supports and services to you undergo an NDIS Worker Screening Check and confirm if the worker has a clearance.

If your plan is self-managed and you use supports and services from unregistered NDIS providers, the provider (if an individual) or their workers are not required to have undergone an NDIS Worker Screening Check. However, you can ask an individual who is an unregistered NDIS provider and workers who are providing supports and services to you to have an NDIS Worker Screening Check.

If you want your workers to be screened for a clearance:

  • Request access to the NDIS Worker Screening Database (NWSD). You will be allocated a SMP ID.
  • Ask your worker to apply for an NDIS Worker Screening Clearance. They will need to know your SMP ID and your surname. The quickest way for them to apply is online via the Worker Screening websiteDedicated fact sheets has been created to help them navigate the worker portal registration, online identity check and application process.
  • You will receive a verification request once your worker has submitted their application. You will have 30 days to log in to the NSWD and verify the application. Their clearance to work cannot be processed until your verification is received.
  • After you have verified the application through the NWSD, the Worker Screening Unit will complete the relevant checks, review any assessible information and decide on the outcome of the application. When an outcome is available you will be notified through the NWSD.

Keep up to date with your worker’s application

The NWSD will display information to help self-managed and plan-managed participants know whether a worker is eligible to work. For applications in progress the ‘eligible to work’ status will read “No”.

Your workers can continue to work while their application is in progress. Or, you can decide if you want them to wait for a clearance. The choice is up to you.

If concerning information is received about your worker during the application process, they will be told to stop work straight away until an outcome is reached. You will be notified if your worker is prohibited from providing supports and services to you.

After a clearance is issued, the ‘eligible to work’ status in the NWSD will be set to “Yes”. You will be notified through the NWSD of any change to your worker’s ‘eligible to work’ status.
